Postcards With Tales

I received this today from my friend Vicky in Athens Greece. Vicky knows I love Pelicans, so this is sure a favorite for me. I especially loved the whole story on the back of the postcard about Petros..

Petros was a White Pelican, who was the official mascot of the Greek island of Mykonos.
In 1958 a wounded pelican was found off the coast of Paranga shore by a local fisherman. The pelican was nursed to health and remained on the island supported by locals. It soon adopted the name “Petros”, as a joke between the locals, as "petro" in Greek means rock, stone but metaphorically hard and horny. To great disappointment by locals and tourists alike, Petros was hit by a car on 2 December 1985 and failed to recover.[1][2]
Subsequently, three new pelicans reside around the main town of Mykonos. One, honorifically, was given the name Petros. (wikipedia)

What Do you Call A Person That Collects Postcards?

A Deltiologist is a person who participates in "the study and collection of postcards. Compared to philately, the identification of a postcard's place and time of production can often be an impossible task because postcards, unlike stamps, are produced in a decentralized, unregulated manner. For this reason, some collectors choose to limit their acquisitions to cards by specific artists and publishers, or by time and location."(from Wikipedia)

Teaching Through Postcards

From Rodrigos Blog  City
Philippines
Most of us that are Post carders had our first introduction to postcards and pen-pals when we were kids. That is were most of us started with  our appreciation for the world we live in and  for different cultures, Not to mention the friendships that develop and grow through correspondence in writing postcards. It just makes sense  that teachers would see the value in getting kids involved in the hobby of postcards. Here Rodrigo (one of my postcard pals from the World in Postcards Yahoo Group) has created an incredible display of his postcards for the children of the school where he teaches. You can also see on Rodrigo's blog the many benefits of using postcards to help in teaching everything from Volcanoes to Dinosaurs.

Happy Dyngus Day

I'm in the search of some Dyngus Day postcards~The Monday after Easter is Known as Dingus Day (Wet Monday) is a tradition in  Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic communities where  early in the morning boys awake girls by pouring a bucket of water on their head and striking them about the legs with long thin twigs or switches made from willow, birch or decorated tree branches. The custom of pouring water was an ancient spring rite of cleansing, purification, and fertility. Now a days young people are known for hiding and pouring water on unsuspected passers-by.
